Youthful North Star Singers debut
North Star Singers, a brand new way to engage area young people in the magic of music, had a rousing start September 27.
Thirty-five youngsters between the ages of six and 15 inaugurated the Singers’ this season, many of them sporting their custom made concert T-shirts made by Kimberley’s Big Magic Design. No auditions are required for youngsters to join, and registration for additional members is open until October 18.
“We’re focused both on the joy of singing and the good vocal technique that makes sure these kids have a lifetime of musical pleasures ahead of them,” said Marta Zeegers, the organizer and leader of the North Star Singers. “And we’ll have fun! We’ll play lots of singing games as well as learning age appropriate repertoire. There’s plenty of space and we’re eager to welcome more singers. And no auditions!”
Singing a wide variety of songs, the North Star Singers are arranged in two groups. Juniors are ages six to nine and Intermediates are nine to 15-years-old. While they rehearse separately on Wednesday nights (Juniors from 6-7 p.m., Intermediates from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.,) all of these aspiring songbirds will enjoy singing a wide variety of songs with concerts in their future, both for them as separate ensembles as well as one all-inclusive choir.
Marta Zeegers is a longtime Kimberley Community Choir director, and the inspiration and heart of these youthful choirs. University trained as a musician and soprano, she is also an experienced early learning educator and performer. She is joined by another local professional, accompanist Daniel Bailey. His many talents include playing the piano and guitar. He is currently teaching both Musikgarten and Music for Young Children classes also.
