Election Day today for ʔaq̓am residents

Wednesday, February 17 is Election Day for ʔaq̓am residents.

Residents are voting to elect chief and two councillors from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Dan Joe Memorial Gym, 7500B Mission Road, Cranbrook.

“Please note due to the COVID-19 virus, safety of the community is a priority thus we are encouraging electors to vote via phone-in ballot at (250) 426-5717.

“Voters phoning in their ballots will be asked specific questions to verify their identity including Band Registry (Status) Number.

“Electors are still able to vote in-person, if they wish, outlined Chief Electoral Officer Tricia Thomas in a Feb. 16 Polling Notice for the By-Election of Councillors.

NOTE: If you call in to cast your ballot, your vote will be counted, and you do not need to vote in-person, and vice versa.

“The votes will be counted immediately after the close of the poll on February 17, and the results will be declared following the count.

“As a safety measure, we are reducing the number of people in attendance, and will stream the count online at this hyperlink.”

The live streaming will begin shortly after the close of the polls.
