Fake gofundme accounts seek to profit from ʔaq’am fire

ʔaq’am Community Nasuʔkin (Chief) Joe Pierre Jr. this afternoon reported that a couple of gofundme accounts have been opened, stating they are raising funds for the community in the wake of the ongoing St. Mary River Wildfire.

Those accounts are fake, he stressed during a press conference in the Band Administration Office today.

“Unfortunately,” he said, pausing to swallow emotion, “there are folks out there who are trying to take advantage of this situation. We’ve been made aware of some bogus gofundme pages that are using our community name.

“Our community is not using gofundme in any way,” he said.

If people are interested in making a donation or a financial donation to the community, Chief Pierre advised they can do so through ʔaq’am administration office and through director of finance Ivan Winters at [email protected].

“It just makes me sick thinking about what folks are trying to do with the situation here,” he concluded.
