Fire in ʔaq’am is now a Wildfire of Note
The wildfire discovered at 2:16 p.m. today along the St. Mary River in ʔaq’am is now a Wildfire of Note.
BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports the out-of-control fire has grown to about 60 hectares and is highly visible.
The BC Wildfire Service and Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services are working alongside the ʔaq’am Community (St. Mary’s Indian Band) and RCMP in response to this incident.
Ground crews are being supported with helicopters and airtankers, though strong winds are challenging aviation efforts.
Additional resources are en route.
A tactical evacuation was undertaken along with ʔaq’am implementing an evacuation order for residents living along Mission Wasa Low Road and Mission Road (see below).
The suspected cause of the fire is downed powerlines.
