Avalanche players moving to CIS programs

College of the Rockies is pleased to announce that three members of the 2013-2014 bronze medal men’s Avalanche team will be moving on to Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) programs.

Setter Nick Schmidt will be joining the University of British Columbia – Okanagan Heat where he will be competing for a starting setting position. Schmidt was the starting setter for the Avalanche for two seasons and was instrumental in the bronze medal win at the 2014 PACWEST Championships. While attending College of the Rockies Schmidt was enrolled in the Engineering program and will be working toward a Science degree at UBCO.

Brady Atwood, who played leftside and middle for the Avalanche, has signed with the Grant MacEwan Griffins for the 2014 – 2015 season. Atwood played two years for the Avs and has the physical attributes to become a force in the CIS.  Having completed University Transfer – Science courses at College of the Rockies, Atwood will be working toward a Bachelor degree in Science at Grant MacEwan.

Leftside Jack Newman will be starting his CIS career by joining the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Newman played one season for the Avalanche where he developed into one of the strongest attackers in the PACWEST. His hard work and intensity paid off with his promotion to the CIS level program. Newman will also be working toward a Bachelor of Science degree after completing University Transfer – Science courses at College of the Rockies.

Men’s Avalanche Coach Steve Kamps says, “We are thrilled to see the hard work of Nick, Brady and Jack paying off.  College of the Rockies’ volleyball program continues to develop players to move onto the CIS.  The transferability of the programs and courses offered at the College helps these athletes, and all students, easily move from college to universities throughout Western Canada.”
