Erin Latimer leads Canada at Panorama
The Canadian Para-Alpine team continued to push hard on Saturday during the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships at Panorama Mountain Resort, with Toronto’s Erin Latimer leading the team with a seventh place finish in the women’s super Combined standing event.
Latimer combined time was 2:18.47 and Alana Ramsay, of Calgary finished a close eighth (2:19.17).
The day began with an over-cast sky and flat light, but that didn’t stop the Canadian team from coming out in full force.
Alberta’s Kirk Schornstein of Spruce Grove, showed strength during his downhill run to finish overall in in ninth place (2:02.17) in the men’s (standing) Super Combined, while Calgary’s Kurt Oatway continued to push through the track securing 11th (2:06.45) in the men’s (sitting) Super Combined.
Both Canadian men racing Super Combined (standing) had a tough day during Saturday’s downhill run. Braydon Luscombe of Duncan, DNF’d before the first interval, where Matt Hallat, of Coquitlam, BC was racing strong and DNF’d on the bottom half of the course.
Missing from today’s roster were Sault Ste. Marie’s Mac Marcoux and his guide BJ Marcoux. During training last week Mac Marcoux, caught an edge and fell. As a result of the fall it was determined he had a small tear in his left meniscus. The decision was made by Marcoux, his coaches and physio team that he would withdraw from the remainder of the competition.
Marcoux’s success during the speed events, claiming gold in Wednesday’s downhill and silver in Tuesday’s Super-G, meant he had accomplished his goals for IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships. It was a difficult decision to withdrawal from the remaining events and it was not made lightly. However, as Marcoux desires to have a long competitive ski career, it is important that his focus shifts to a full recovery.
The 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championship continues today, March 8 at Panorama Mountain Resort.
