U13 Boys take bronze at provincials

An eager group of 13-year-old Cranbrook boys culminated their three months of hard work with a trip to the Alberta Provincials and ultimately a bronze medal win.

“We were excited to take this group of boys to Edmonton. They have a lot of heart and the potential to win at this level,” said Rob Mogielka, head coach of the East Kootenay Volleyball Club (EKVC). “The boys have dedicated a lot of practice hours to get here,” added Jesse Jimenez, assistant coach.

The EKVC U13 Avalanche (AVS) boys started in January with practices running twice a week. “This was the third tournament the boys played in this year. They placed second in the Premier Tournament and third in the U14 division of the Cranbrook Cup,” said Mogielka.

The boys, along with their coaches, attended the Provincial finals in Edmonton, on April 12 and 13. They played four games on Saturday earning a second place finish in their division.

The Sunday morning match to decide which teams would play for gold consisted of three close sets. The EKVC U13 AVS were defeated by Dome Club 1. The boys went on to take the bronze in a two set game with a score of 26-24 in the first set and 25-22 in the second set against NAVC Gold Bears.
