Krista’s Eye on the East Kootenay

LarchaPalooza and then some

By Krista Nebloch

With the geese heading south against the backdrop of bluebird Kootenay skies, fall arrived and brought the usual mixed bag of weather tricks and treats.

While we did get our fair share of sunshiny days we also saw some frosty, soggy, foggy ones too. Wasa was fogged in for what seemed like a very, very long time.

I was getting bummed out by the gloomy weather and baked 13 apple pies with a friend to try to shake the blahs.

Then I drove up to Kimberley to deliver the pies and I popped out of the deep fog into bright sunshine, blue skies and the larch! I was both stunned and thrilled!

I was immediately taken by all the fall colours and larchy beauty of Kimberley. Thus LarchaPalooza ensued.

I shot up in Meadowbrook making good use of my friend’s naked tepee.

Lead image: Interesting also was the stark contrast to view from Wasa – a post apocalyptic-esque Kimberley when the slash was being burned.

There were also birds, sunsets, eagles, trains and BIG kitties! Halloween was a puuuuuurfect way to cap off the month.

I LOVE dressing up with my friends and singing! No big surprise, I LOVE Halloween. A  Zombie Jazz Singer was I and we Karaoke-d our lil hearts out!

Here also is a bit of what I saw when I woke up to the first snow.

A little early but what a gift, a winter wonderland right out the front door; shooter’s delight!

We got a good four inches on the valley floor in Wasa. YAAAAAAAAY!

Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about winter…BLEEEECH!, Not YAAAAAAAY!

Too long, too dark, too cold. TOO BLEEEEEECH.

That is how I have felt for 40 some winters in Edmonton.

I can honestly say, for the first time, I am actually looking forward to winter and it feels GOOD! Go Kootenays!

A good friend of mine had a perfect description of the season’s not so subtle changes this year. It is like someone flipped a switch.

That statement rings in my ears as I look at what I shot in Kimberley when the larches turned.

Is it just me or were they super stunning this year?

And that is the toss to my next set of pics; a series dedicated to the larch.

PS: I have often said, of what I am shooting, that it looks like a painting. Thus, I am playing with painting some of the pics I’m taking.

Enjoy!
