Flats resident appearing on History’s Alone

At a time when Canal Flats is facing the most uncertain future in its history following the closure of the Canfor Mill, the community has a local to cheer for by the name of Greg Ovens.

He will be appearing in season three of History Channel’s hit show Alone.

“Congrats to Canal Flats’ new reality TV star! Hi every one; pleased to announce that Greg Ovens and his daughter, through tireless efforts, got our region branded at an international level. Greg still needs tremendous support so check out Greg Ovens Alone season 3 Facebook page.

“Greg will be appearing at various local venues during the airing of Alone and Greg’s team has more surprises to follow through out the year,” states a post on the Facebook page Concerned Citizens of Canal Flats.

Despite the show switching from rugged Vancouver Island woods locales to the different climes of South America, the History Channel says the basics of the competition are not changing much: “Ten hard-core survivalists are placed alone in the wilderness, and the contestants have one mission: to stay alive. There are no camera crews, no teams, and no gimmicks. At stake is a $500,000 cash prize awarded to the person who can last the longest.

“Equipped only with limited gear, their wilderness experience, and cameras to self-document their journeys, these brave men and women are completely separated from one another in harsh, unforgiving terrain. To survive, they must find food and water, build shelters and fend off predators. They will face extreme isolation, psychological distress, and treacherous environmental conditions as they descend into the unknown.”

Alone is also getting large viewing numbers, the History Channel reported.

“The two-hour (season two) special has wrapped up the 13-episode second season of Alone, a popular History survival series. The season finale was seen by almost 1.6 million viewers during the first hour, and 1.54 million during the second part,” History noted.

Season three will feature “10 episodes, 10 tough survivalists, rough Patagonia terrain, one mission – to survive. Pure adrenaline, previously unseen challenges, urgent medical evacuations, a propeller-driven duck trap… need we say more?” History described.
