Cranbrook Arts in June

Cranbrook Arts is looking forward to hosting James McElroy’s exhibit, ‘Kootenay Burn’ for the month of June.

Continuing with our Canada 150 theme, this exhibit demonstrates the common rebirth of forest life after the cycle of forest fire. These particular photographs were taken in Kootenay National Park and explore the fire-altered landscape.

This collection of images was gathered with the help of a grant from Columbia Basin Trust. James McElroy writes, ‘They capture the many faces of Kootenay burn from its ashes to the renewal process with the multitude of colour, texture, light, line and tone that is present through summer autumn, winter and spring.’

James hopes his photographs inspire people to see the value and beauty in one of nature’s natural cycles. Prints will be available for purchase.

To meet James McElroy, the public is invited to the Opening Reception, Saturday, June 10 from 2 – 4 p.m.

Our last half-day school professional day workshop for creative kids will be held Friday, June 2 with Colleen Routley. Register at the Gallery, 1013, Baker St. Space permitting.

We hope the public will come by and see us in Balment Park during Sam Steele Days for the assembly of the Canada 150 mosaic mural, a project jointly sponsored by Heritage Canada, Sam Steele Society and Cranbrook Arts.

This mural will be composed of over 500 small canvases each representing the cultural background of a cross section of Cranbrook’s population. You might even like to paint a square (examples pictured above). The finished mural will be hung in Western Financial Place.

Our call to member artists for July is work that represents the Faces of Canada. We hope to see portraiture of Canada’s people and wildlife. Any medium will be accepted. Have your work to the gallery by Friday, June 30.

See you in the gallery, 1013, Baker St. Cranbrook.
